Seven accused individuals of German far-left group stand trial over series of violent incidents

Seven individuals allegedly belonging to the German far-left militant group Antifa Ost went on trial on Tuesday, accused for attacks targeting rightwing extremists that resulted in the nickname “the hammer group”.

International terror listing and prosecution case

Earlier this month, the United States designated Antifa Ost as a terrorist group together with several other left-wing extremist and anarchist networks.

Authorities in Germany state the network was behind targeting sites in the country and neighboring Hungary between 2018 and 2023. Included in the allegations is the multiple attacks of a business proprietor in central Thuringia, whose establishment was known as a meeting point for rightwing activists.

Certain individuals are said to have employing hammers against suspected far-right members, leaving some severely injured.

Trial details and international connections

Court proceedings involving seven defendants is expected to run until mid-2026 in the city of Dresden. Two defendants, identified as Johann G and Paul M., are additionally accused for violent incidents in the Hungarian capital during early 2023, around an yearly gathering called the “day of honor” that draws far-right participants from throughout the continent.

Separately, another German activist, Maja T., is facing trial in Hungary for four counts of attempted violent acts against far-right activists prior to the same rally in that year.

Regional context and organizational structure

The former East Germany has historically served as a hotbed for both right-wing extremist and anti-immigrant youth groups, as well as the often militant antifascist groups that counter them.

Prosecutors describe Johann G. as a senior figure within the organization, responsible for organizing violent acts and bringing in new members.

Together with Paul M., he is accused of organizing instruction courses where leftwing extremists trained in fighting methods and rehearsed attacks. In storage facilities managed by Paul M, the group allegedly accumulated tools, irritant sprays, disguises and communication devices.

Previous convictions and international reactions

Another militant previously active with the organization, Lina E, became a symbolic figure within some far-left activist circles following her conviction in 2023 for attacks on suspected right-wing individuals.

America's terrorist listing renders organization affiliates barred from entering the United States, blocks financial holdings they may have within the American economy and criminalizes providing material support to them.

Germany's far-right AfD party applauded the US decision and urged the German administration to follow suit. However, the country's diplomatic office merely commented it had “acknowledged” of the US designation.

“The threat posed by the [Antifa Ost] group has substantially diminished lately. Key leaders and particularly violent members have either already been convicted or remain detained.”
